You downloaded a Lesson Assignment from a course page and you get an error when trying to save it and any changes you made. The error code is either "File is read-only" or "File is locked"

This happens, because you clicked on OPEN and not SAVE in your browser.
To be able to save your data to this document, you have to save it just one time to your local computer, preferably to the desktop or anywhere you will be able to find it again. For this guide we will assume you opened the English 8 Module 1 Section 1 assignment, filename "En8Mod1Sec1.doc" from the website.
In Word 2007 you will NOT find the usual menu system. Instead, well, "ribbons". To make things worse, the commands you really need right now are hidden (yes, hidden) behind the big, round Office symbol on the very top left of your Word 2007 window.

Don't believe me? Click on it.
Surprise. All the useful commands, safely hidden away. Who needs them anyways.
Now, click on SAVE AS, then decide:
a) I want, that only VERY few people are able to open my file = choose the topmost "Word Document, ... default file format", or
b) I want, that EVERYBODY can open my document, including the teacher (which is a good thing) = choose Word 97-2003 Document.

After you made that decision and clicked on a or b, this File Dialogbox will pop up. To make it easy for you to find the file again, select DESKTOP, then add your name to the beginning of the filename, in this example "Tom Thumb". The only thing left to do now is to click on SAVE.

To find it again, look on your desktop. (Close down or minimize all programs to do this) If you do not have too many icons on your desktop, it will look like this:

Very important! Never(!) delete files beginning with ~$. (In this screenshot, the one below the red rectangle) These are important temporary files created by Word. They will vanish automatically the moment you close either this particular file or Word altogether.
